Roof Rope Rescue Drill

By West Harrison Fire Department
August 22, 2024

This past Tuesday during our departments weekly drill night over 15 of our members reviewed how to properly deploy and use our life saving rope to effect a roof rope rescue. Roof rope rescues are a high risk/low frequency event and due to that it is a perishable skill that must be reviewed multiple times throughout the year. Roof rope rescues occur when an occupant is trapped by fire or smoke on the upper floors of a multiple dwelling, where ground ladders or aerial ladder accessibility is severely limited or completely out of play. Members reviewed the multiple ways to secure an anchor, how to tie off and how to properly lower a member down via a rope system. As previously stated although a seldom occurred event our members are always training to the highest skill set possible to provide the best level of fire protection to the residents of West Harrison and our neighboring and mutual aid jurisdictions.
